About the Endocannabinoid System

Medical cannabis in Chicago is an ever-growing phenomenon bringing relief to patients of all kinds. If you’ve ever wondered how it works, the answer might surprise you. It’s all thanks to the ECS, or endocannabinoid system. This part of your body is responsible for the effects of using cannabis-based products, and it’s essential to understanding the real science behind cannabis’s health benefits.

It consists of three major parts:

Endocannabinoids — These are natural substances produced inside your body that, under the right conditions, can react with external cannabinoids.

Nervous System Receptions — These sites are what endocannabinoids and cannabinoids bond with.

Enzymes — Just as they do with food and other materials, biological enzymes break down endocannabinoids and cannabinoids.

The system is more critical to the body than merely processing cannabis, however. It’s part of what helps you maintain homeostasis, the state of equilibrium you need to remain healthy. The ECS is what activates when something in your body is out of balance. When you’re too hot, it triggers sweat. When you hear your stomach growl, it’s your ECS reminding you to eat. This role makes it a prime potential center for addressing a wide range of medical issues, which is why medicinal uses for cannabis remain such a promising area of treatment exploration — one where patients, doctors, and researchers make strides toward improvement every day.

A Quick Guide to Terpenes

jar of cannabis in a dispensaryYou have probably heard all about how different strains of Marijuana have different effects on the body. While we used to differentiate these strains based on whether they are an indica, sativa, or hybrid strain, we now know that the terpene profile is a more reliable way to ascertain how your cannabis will affect you. Let’s break it down:

What Are Terpenes?

In a cannabis plant, there are glands that produce cannabinoids like THC and CBD. These same glands produce terpenes. These terpenes are oils that provide the different strains with their distinctive aromas, colors, and taste. While these terpenes were part of an evolutionary adaptation to ward off predators and attract pollinating insects, humans are now breeding strains to create specific terpenes. Impressively, we have identified more than 100 varieties.

Different Terpenes Have Different Effects

While the terpene profile of different cannabis strains affects their flavor and aroma, the most interesting thing is how they affect your body. Each type of terpene is associated with certain effects. For example, while limonene is associated with improved mood, linalool is known to aid relaxation. Each strain of cannabis can contain a variety of terpines, and they all work in harmony to produce a unique effect.

When you visit our Chicago marijuana dispensary, our helpful staff can help you select a strain that best meets your needs. While Midway Dispensary currently only provides cannabis to medical marijuana patients, we expect to begin selling cannabis for adult use in January 2020.

Illinois Becomes the 11th State to Legalize Cannabis for Adult Use

chicago medical marijuana dispensariesIllinois is now the 11th State in the Republic to legalize the sale of cannabis to adults 21 and over. What does this mean for us?  It means that beginning January 1, 2020 adults 21 years and older may purchase cannabis legally from a licensed Illinois dispensary that has been approved for adult use by the state of Illinois prior to any sales, like Midway Dispensary, a Chicago medical marijuana dispensary.

Here’s a Quick Breakdown of the Act:

  • What? Illinois has legalized adult use cannabis sales for those 21 and over.
  • Where? Any adult use licensed cannabis dispensary, like Midway Dispensary, Chicago’s premier medical cannabis dispensary, expects to be ready and licensed by January 1, 2020.
  • When? First sales are allowed on January 1, 2020!
  • Who? Any adult over the age of 21 years old with a valid ID can purchase.

How will the new law affect the medical program?

If you are a current patient at Midway Dispensary, you will continue to purchase your medicine at the medical tax rates. Illinois patients are given priority over adult use customers if there is a shortage of product available. You will still need an active MMJ card to purchase your medicine under the (now permanent) medical cannabis program. You still need to comply with the rules and regulations of the medical cannabis program. You will still be able to get your RSO’s, CBD products, and current cannabis options after the adult use sales begin.

We are still waiting for rules to be drafted by the departments, and lots of work remains to be done, but we are all very excited to be able to help more patients get access to great medicine! Thank you for your continued support.

How Medical Cannabis is Grown – Part 2

marijuana oil in Chicago

In our previous blog post, we talked a little bit about how medical cannabis is grown in Illinois. The growing process for medical marijuana is strictly regimented, monitored, and regulated to meet the state’s standards. In this post, we will go over the other specifications for farming medical marijuana and some of the additional regulations around doing so.

Please note that the only people who are legally able to grow medical marijuana in Illinois are licensed growers. Individuals that are not permitted to produce medical cannabis in the state cannot grow it on their own.

One of the first steps in facilitating proper medical cannabis growth is choosing the correct soil and method of growing. Many facilities prefer to hydroponically grow their medical marijuana, while others opt for more traditional techniques, such as planting in coco fiber or standard, fertilized dirt instead. Each type of soil has its benefits, but it really all comes down to how much maintenance you are willing to do to produce high-quality medical cannabis.

After choosing soil, many licensed growers decide on their lighting next. One of the key factors in seeing success with growing medical marijuana is deciding on the right type of light your plants need to flourish. Whether you are choosing fluorescent lighting or going the LED route, figuring out what your plants will need will take time, patience, and effort.

The Growing Process

Due to state regulations, medical marijuana patients cannot grow their own medical cannabis. This is for obvious reasons, such as making sure it is appropriately raised, monitored, and observed under laws that allow it to be safe for everyone.

Many dispensaries have to grow their medical cannabis plants indoors due to the lack of space and colder climate in Illinois. These dispensaries usually have another location in which the cannabis is grown, with a specific area dedicated to the growing process. This area, known as the “Grow Room,” has to be temperature regulated, as well as have the proper lighting, soil, and automated irrigation for the plants to thrive. These kind of rooms are usually dark since any form of outdoor lighting can interrupt the plant’s growth. In part 2 of our blog post about how medical marijuana is grown, we will cover the different regulations in which it has to raised within.
